Private Conversations

The confessional before you is ornate and well maintained, ebony colored wood embellished with the visage of two angels. A jet black curtain separates the confessional from the rest of the Church, offering a surprising degree of privacy to any eavesdroppers nearby. Unlike the rest of Krakow, the inside is dimly lit by a small light bulb securely attached to the ceiling which emits a faint red light. While the atmosphere isn't exactly cozy, it is private.

A smooth voice calls out to you once you've sat down, familiar enough to identify the speaker despite the partition between you.

"Welcome welcome. I take it something is on your mind?"

We're in a museum now, Harry.

[She groans]

Are all of you demons so high-and-mighty or was I so unlucky I got the one who likes to flaunt how worldly you are?

[Maybe she screwed up during the summoning process, she figures]

Anyway, I want you to check every modified lamppost in Krakow every three hours and make sure they're all working. Report to me any lamp that seems to be failing -- you'll know right away if any of them is malfunctioning, it'll be obvious. The last thing we want is to have to repeat all this ordeal over again.

Wow. That's. That's actually very awful. It makes you sound actually tolerable.

[There's a pause for a moment while she mulls so many awful scenarios that could have happened]

...yes, I don't regret summoning you. If I'm going to get my soul consumed then at least it's not by some brute.

[Maybe she got lucky instead. Not bad for a first-time summoner, she figures. Mental pat pat on her own back, because she sure isn't going to miss a chance to make herself feel like a winner]

Are there any particularly enticing people here? Tell me aaaaall about those that aren't a waste of time. Surely there must be one or two that deserve more than a passing glance.

[She has her own opinions formed already, but she's interested in finding out if there's anyone Rembrandt us paying attention to]

[It'd have spared at least two worlds from her machinations, that'd be the golden end, haha]

They say great minds think alike, birds of a feather flock together, all that. I'm sure that would all qualify as an insult for both of us.

[Some monsters would rejoice from being told they have the mind of a demon, but given what Rembrandt said most demons are like then she sure doesn't want to be told that -- and she's pretty sure something more powerful than a human wouldn't like being equated to one]

Of course. Why, it's my chance to find out what you think about people now that we're talking to them instead of using them as mere test subjects for the voids. It could be some nice insight into your head, dear.

[Because, really...Rembrandt is a mystery in many ways. She'd love to dispel those mysteries]

Doesn't make that make a hypocrite?

[Embrace your wretchedness, Mikami]

[Well he's not wrong. That's truly what drives the most influential and powerful people in her world -- including her. One single belief is what leads them to greatness]

I cannot be impressed with him because he was in jail.

[Because really, what kind of person destined for greatness and achieving their success is locked in jail like that?]

But you're not wrong, not wrong at all. I hardly can disagree when I'm like that too.

[Pfft, of course she has taken advantage of his cooking, she wouldn't pass the opportunity to have ten-tier cake]

There's a specific person I'm interested in...I believe you noticed I offered Dist a spot among my ranks. His knowledge will prove very useful in the future -- I could use it to create technology only I would have access to. The power of the Abyss plus technology nobody will be able to counter will give me indisputable domination!

[She hasn't gone far in planning how to incorporate Dist, the only thing she knows is...]

If he survives after we breach the Abyss I'll abduct him to my world, and once I'm there...I'm getting him to play along no matter what.

[Dist won't have fun if he doesn't join willingly. Turning people into revenants is her trademark move in her world]

Yes. I'll offer him anything he'll want, all the validation and challenges he'll want to test his skills. If he still refuses, I'll tear him to pieces until he despairs and sees my offer as his only option.

[...]

And if he proves to overcome that...I'll have no choice but to turn him into a revenant. But I'd like to leave that as the last option.

[...last option she'll work on, anyway. It's going to take a whiiiile to tune her technology to affect Dist, so she sure would like to get started on that anyway]

[The Lady's voice takes a rather strange cadence, the excitement and pride very obvious in her voice. Oh, great, she's tapping into her natural skill as a mad scientist]

I'm great at manipulating brains and minds! And my best work, the one everyone knows and dreads, are my wasps, my beloved slaver wasps! [She really should lower her voice, sure would be awkward if someone was out there in the church] I created insects that fly and dissolve quickly into people's mouths. The compounds invade the target's brain and makes them vulnerable to any order I give them!

[Entire towns full of revenants exist out there. The problem is that people like her -- those with that scientific spark -- are immune to her work, so it's used mostly to have spies all over Europa. There's a good chance Dist could be immune...well she'll cross that bridge when she gets there]

Oh, but it's not like they turn into zombies. They continue their normal lives until I give an order or until someone finds out they're revenants. Some of them don't even notice they have been wasped.

Exactly! Parasites! Entire hives of wasps, with drones and warriors and a queen and-- [Oh she must control herself. Give her a moment to simmer down from her euphoria. Rembrandt asking such a question is sobering because...]

Once or twice.

[...because of that.]

But I decided not to even try, after seeing some of your power and competence. I hate to admit it, but you must be the best assistant I ever had. And also you could punch my head off if you wanted. Both those make trying that on you...unwise.

Also, I order you to never tell anyone I said you were the best assistant I ever had.

[Besides, would it even have a chance to work on supernatural creatures? Hardly, she supposes. They don't even work on mere animals!]

[but she's a nerd that will rule a continent, excuse you, remrem]

Thanks for the descriptive response, I wanted to imagine that particular mental image! What would I do without you.

[Not imagine that, in the first place, which she'd have prefered. The Lady stands up from her seat. Hardly anyone will ask him that, huh? That so?]

That's what you think, but they're still thinking we're married. I'm starting to hold a grudge because of that, Rembrandt, you fool. Lucrezia never forgets her grudges.

[She talked more than she expected. She had planned to complain a bit, give the order about the lamp posts, and make her exit, but instead she got distracted. Well at least it wasn't boring, she can concede that much.

Without even bothering to give a 'see you later', she steps out of the confessional. Byyyye, Rembrandt]
